Biography:

Since the publications of Robert Stevenson (in particular his seminal book Renaissance and Baroque Musical Sources in the Americas, 1970), most scholars agreed in that the Gaspar Fernandes listed as a singer in the cathedral of Évora, Portugal, in the 1590s was the same person as the Gaspar Fernández who was hired as chapelmaster first in Guatemala Cathedral and later in Puebla Cathedral. However, documentation located by Omar Morales (2013) indicates that the singer Gaspar Fernandes “de Évora” cannot be identified with the Gaspar Fernández documented in Guatemala and Puebla, whose period of service in the Guatemalan cathedral, since at least 1596, coincides with the presence of the singer Gaspar Fernandes “de Évora” in that Portuguese cathedral in 1599. They are clearly two different musicians.

Biography:

Gabriel Ruiz de Morga may have taken the manuscript known as "Cancionero de Gaspar Fernández", MEX-Oc s.s. (1), from Puebla to Oaxaca; an inscription on fol. 73r of the manuscript reads: "Este libro es de Gabriel Ruiz de Morga quien se lo allare le dara su allasgo y a dios que nos beamos" [This book belongs to Gabriel Ruiz de Morga; God, whom we hope to see, grant him blessing who finds it", Stevenson (1970), p. 193]. According to Tello (2001), p. xxiii, Ruiz de Morga, a contralto singer, appears for the first time in the Libro de Actas Capitulares de la Catedral de Oaxaca on 21 February 1653: "...asi mismo se ordeno en este cavildo que atento a que Gabriel Ruiz de morga Canta su parte en la Capilla de Vos de Contraalto se le den para ayuda de costa cuarenta pesos por Cada año..." (LACO, Libro I, fol. 112v). Tello suggests that he was related to Francisco Ruiz de Morga, secretary of the cabildo since 17 October 1645.
