List of musicians

Info

This website provides basic information about musicians and non-musicians related to music books in the database; it is not intended to present a full biography of musicians, but to establish useful connections with their sources, institutions, locations, works, documents, and bibliography. Under "Locations" of a composer's entry we list all the locations in which the composer lived and those in which his music is currently found; under "Institutions", we list only the institutions where the composer worked or to which he applied for a position through the so-called "oposiciones". Whenever possible, we'll try to indicate the approximate periods of service in each institution. The distinction between "Locations" and "Institutions" provides a useful overview about the dissemination of a composer's works; for instance, Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia (1561-1627) worked only in two cathedrals ("institutions") in Huesca and Zaragoza, but his music is found in at least twenty-two "locations" in Spain and the New World.

Biography:

The list of works provided by Garbayo contains the following works: "Himnos: Qui Paraclitus diceris, E-Tc; Veni Creator, E-Tc. Motetes: Ave sanctissimum, 4V, E-E; Domine, memento mei, E-Mmc; Madrigales: Navego en hondo mar enbravecido, 4V. Varia: Misa, E-Mmc; Passio, E-Mmc".

RISM attributes the work by Bernal in the Orphenica lyra (1554) to the theorist Afonso Perea Bernal (b. Seville?-d. Coimbra, 1593), but it is most likely that the polyphonic works are by the composer (of uncertain first name) Francisco? / José? Bernal González. According to Stevenson, "Bernal, Afonso Perea", Grove Music Online, the Ave sanctissimum once attributed to "A. Bernal" is by José Bernal Gonçález; in the latter's entry in Grove Music Online, Stevenson attributes to him all the works ascribed to "Bernal" or "Bernal Gonçalez".

The manuscript P-Pm MM-42 (olim Ms. 1577), with organ tablatures (same system used by Venegas de Henestrosa, Hernando de Cabezón and Correa de Araujo), contains the only four works known by this organist/composer: two are titled Obra and the other two Registro. According to Preciado (1999-2002), p. 715, the obras are "llenos para órgano" and the registros are "registros partidos de mano derecha (de uno y dos tiples, espectivamente)"; the four works are like tientos.
