List of musicians

Info

This website provides basic information about musicians and non-musicians related to music books in the database; it is not intended to present a full biography of musicians, but to establish useful connections with their sources, institutions, locations, works, documents, and bibliography. Under "Locations" of a composer's entry we list all the locations in which the composer lived and those in which his music is currently found; under "Institutions", we list only the institutions where the composer worked or to which he applied for a position through the so-called "oposiciones". Whenever possible, we'll try to indicate the approximate periods of service in each institution. The distinction between "Locations" and "Institutions" provides a useful overview about the dissemination of a composer's works; for instance, Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia (1561-1627) worked only in two cathedrals ("institutions") in Huesca and Zaragoza, but his music is found in at least twenty-two "locations" in Spain and the New World.

Biography:

As seen by María Gembero-Ustárroz in several documents in Madrid,  Archivo Histórico Nacional (E-Mah), María Josefa Carrasco entered the convent of Santa Ana de Ávila on 27 November 1725, and she took her final vows on 30 July 1727.

Alfonso de Vicente (1989), p. 16, indicated that this nun was born in 1727, but this was the year of her profession in Santa Ana de Ávila. Later on, Vicente (2000), p. 529, corrected his mistake and provided María Josefa Carrasco's correct  birthdate and date of final vows. According to Vicente (1989), p. 16, she died in 1770.

Biography:

It should be checked if the composer "Castilho", represented with one work in the manuscript P-Cug MJ1, preserved at the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, was one of the Spanish composers Diego del Castillo or his brother Bernardo Clavijo del Castillo. Paulo Estudante (2006), p. 654, annotated: "For the moment it is impossible to determine with certainty to which one of these musicians the ‘Castilho’ indication refers (if, indeed, it is either). However, in contemporary documents concerning the two brothers, it is clear that the younger brother is almost always referred to as ‘Clavijo’ or ‘Bernardo Clavijo’. Fragile as this argument may be, it is possible that the first work notated in P-Cug MJ1 is by Diego del Castillo. If so, it would be his first work known to modern musicology."
