List of musicians

Info

This website provides basic information about musicians and non-musicians related to music books in the database; it is not intended to present a full biography of musicians, but to establish useful connections with their sources, institutions, locations, works, documents, and bibliography. Under "Locations" of a composer's entry we list all the locations in which he lived and those in which his music is currently found; under "Institutions", we list only the institutions where he worked or to which he applied for a position through the so-called "oposiciones". Whenever possible, we'll try to indicate the approximate periods of service in each institution. The distinction between "Locations" and "Institutions" provides a useful overview about the dissemination of a composer's works; for instance, Sebastián Aguilera de Heredia (1561-1627) worked only in two cathedrals in Huesca and Zaragoza, but his music is found in at least twenty-two locations in Spain and the New World.

Unknown composer. The manuscript E-C 143 contains an Officium and Missa defunctorum by Antonio Hidalgo copied in 1760.

A contemporary organ builder and organist named Juan Antonio de Bartolomé Hidalgo (Bañares, La Rioja, ? — Granada, 10-V-1805) was active in Plasencia (Cáceres) and Granada in the 1770s. At the archive of Granada cathedral, a Miserere for 12 voices with instrumental accompaniment copied in 1777 is ascribed to "Hidalgo"; Juan Ruiz Jiménez suggests that this piece could be by this organist.

Perhaps Antonio Hidalgo, the composer present in E-C 143, is the same person as the organ builder and organist Juan Antonio de Bartolomé Hidalgo.

The Letatus sum for four voices ascribed to Jalón in E-OLI s.s. (pp. 7-14) is not listed by Ezquerro Esteban among the works by Luis Bernardo Jalón, a composer that has been cited with different first names (Luis Jerónimo, Luis Bautista). Ezquerro suggests that perhaps there were two composers with the same last name Jalón (Luis and Bernardo or Luis Bernardo and Luis Jerónimo) and that he could be confused also with the organist Pedro Jalón y Tejada who died in 1655.

The piece Tu valer me da gran guerra in E-Sco 7-1-26 ("Cancionero Musical de la Colombina") is attributed to "Juanes", but it is not possible to ascertain the identity of this composer. Stevenson (1960), 235, indicated that the contra of this work "is rough to the point of uncouthness" and, thus, he dismissed attributing it to Juan de Anchieta, even though his name as "Juanes" had been used: "Juanes de Anchieta capellan e cantor de su alteza" [cited in Barbieri (1890), 22].
