The Tarazona cathedral archive holds two 16th-century documents (without specific dates of their redaction) with detailed inventories of the polyphonic music owned by that institution. The first document, presented here, contains the oldest known inventory (Inventory 1) and the second document has two sections: the first section (Inventory 2) recopies a now lost inventory dated 29 May 1570, and the second section (Inventory 3) incorporates the rest of polyphonic music found at Tarazona cathedral up to the time of the redaction of the second document, most likely 1591. Pedro Calahorra (1992) was the first one to publish these inventories. Books of Hispanic Polyphony IMF-CSIC has incorporated these detailed inventories to its database using the original documents and referring to the three inventories in the list of "Documents" as: 16/3 (1552-1561) [=Inventory 1]; 16/3 (1570-05-29) [lost inventory, but recopied as Inventory 2 in 16/4 (1591)], and 16/4 (1591) [=Inventories 2 and 3]. I would like to thank the Archivist of Tarazona cathedral, Miguel Antonio Franco Garza, for facilitating me the research of all the Tarazona manuscript and printed books of polyphony and related documentation for the present Project.

The detailed Inventory 1 of poliphonic music at Tarazona Cathedral presented here has no date, but on the evidence of the paper watermark examined by Ros-Fábregas (2016-2017), he proposed that it could date from the 1550s. The paper watermark of Inventory 1 is very similar to the watermark found in a Libro de caja y cuentas of 1552 at Tarazona cathedral (see illustrations of the watermark in Inventory 1 and in the Libro de caja y cuentas from 1552); since the previous and following Libros de caja have a different watermark, this indicates that the inventory could date from between 1552 and 1561. Ros-Fábregas examined the paper used for all the Libros de caja y cuentas for this period at Tarazona Cathedral, which are dated: 1535, 1538, 1550, 1552, 1562, 1563, 1565–67, 1571–78, 1574–1582 and 1600–1618.

As pointed out before, a later inventory —most likely from 1591, see 16/4 (1591)— at Tarazona cathedral has two main sections:

a) the first section (Inventory 2) presents the contents of a previous (lost) inventory of 1570 which incorporates the contents of the present Inventory 1 —16/3 (1552-1561)— and other additions up to 1570; at the end of the first section there is the following inscription: "Asta aqui es lo que habia / en el ymbentario viejo que se hizo en 29 de mayo 1570. / Y se an hallado algunas otras cossas mas de lo que havia. / Que las a hecho poner Joan Arnalte limosnero por inchir / papel blanco que sobraba en algunos de los libros viejos / y también algunas cossas de las que estan aqui que por ser / muy biejas y estar malescriptas no pueden servir las a hecho / sacar en otros libros". [Up to here is what there was in the old inventory made on 29 May 1570. And other things (pieces) have been found that were not there, which have been ordered by Joan Arnalte, almoner, to be copied to fill empty pages in some old books and other things (pieces) that are here which since they are very old and are poorly written he has ordered to copy them in other books]. It should be emphasized that the 1570 inventory mentioned in Inventory 2 includes many works that were not in Inventory 1 —16/3 (1552-1561)— ("Up to here is what there was in the old inventory made on 29 May 1570"). Thus those works would have been added between the 1550s and 1570.

The Tarazona inventories are very specific about the contents of each book, providing first a general description and in most cases an abbreviated inventory of each choirbook, in three columns, with names of composers, titles of pieces, and their corresponding folios within the book. Often the ascriptions in the Tarazona manuscripts have been lost and these inventories provide unique evidence to attribute works that otherwise would have remained anonymous. With all this information it is possible to match descriptions with extant (or lost) printed and manuscript polyphonic choirbooks at Tarazona cathedral. Calahorra (1992) was the fist one to publish both inventories, side by side, so that it was possible to compare the differences between the items in this Inventory 1 (1550s) with Inventory 2 (lost 1570 inventory), the latter having been recopied in 1591. To facilitate that useful comparison side by side, Calahorra numbered the items in Inventory 1, but also added numbers corresponding to unexisting items in Inventory 1 found in Inventory 2. Here we have not used that system, and thus we have assigned a number, from [1] to [25], to existing items in Inventory 1 only. Most of the time each item corresponds to only a book, but item [13] mentions two volumes and six items include sets of partbooks.

In this Inventory 1 (1552-1561) of polyphony at Tarazona cathedral there is a total of: 19 choirbooks (14 manuscript and 5 printed), 8 sets of partbooks (4 manuscript and 4 printed) and 1 notebook (cuaderno); they contain a very rich repertoire of Spanish and international polyphony. Sadly, of all these materials from Inventory 1 only four items are extant at Tarazona cathedral: [6] E-TZ-02 (the description of its content, though, was not complete; see below); [9] E-TZ Impr. 02; [10] E-TZ 05 (in Inventory 2 some more pieces were added to this choirbook); and [23] E-TZ Impr. 16 (bassus only of the first of the three sets of partbooks listed here).     

Based on the evidence provided by this Inventory 1, Ros-Fábregas (2001-2002 and 2016-2017) suggested that the extant manuscript E-TZ 2/3 (the most important source of sacred repertory from the time of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Ferdinand) was copied in Tarazona (not in Seville) at a later date than previously thought, since this Inventory 1 does not include many pieces in the list of works of E-TZ 2 and there is no detailed inventory of E-TZ 3 (with masses by Peñalosa), but towards the end of Inventory 1 there is a brief description of an old, unusable book of masses by Peñalosa: "Ytem vn libro de tablas viejo de missas de Peñalosa que no sirve" (see item [19]). Since Inventory 2 (1570) includes complete lists of works of both E-TZ 2 and E-TZ 3, it is most likely that the missing works in E-TZ 2 and those in E-TZ 3 were recopied in Tarazona (from an unusable source) in the interim (between the 1550s and 1570). Probably the rest of the repertory in E-TZ 2 had also been recopied (from an unusable source) shortly before E-TZ 3 was recopied, since they share paper watermarks and codicological characteristics.
