List of works

Info

This menu provides an alphabetical list of polyphonic works catalogued in this database and different ways to search for them. To facilitate text searches, titles in Latin have been normalized using the Liber Usualis and titles in Spanish follow modern orthography; in the complete file of each work, though, in addition to the normalized title, the field "Text incipit" provides the original spelling of the title as it appears in the source.

The results of a search by "Title" offer also additional options to search directly in two other databases: 1) Portuguese Early Music Database (PEM: http://pemdatabase.eu/); and 2) Fondo de Música Tradicional IMF-CSIC (FMT: https://musicatradicional.eu/home). For instance, a search here in BHP for the Latin word "Domine" under "Title" lists some 236 pieces containing that word in the title; at the end of the list, the options to search for the same word in PEM and FMT give additional results after a click: 58 other pieces in PEM, when clicking the link "Click here to search in external resources (PEM)" and 4 other pieces in FMT, when clicking the link "Click here to search in Fondo de Música Tradicional IMF-CSIC". A search for the Spanish word "triste" (sad) provides 20 results here (BHP), 3 in PEM and 59 in FMT. A search by "Text search" here does not offer many results, since only few complete text of works have been included. For a search by music incipit to facilitate identification of possible concordances, see the menu "Movements".

Besides the option searches by "Attribution", "MS/Print", "Institution" and "Location", we are working to improve other search options by: 1) "Genre". As mentioned in the menu "Genres", instrumental genres have not been connected yet to specific works, and further modifications are needed to obtain a complete list of all the works in the database when searching for any given genre; we are working on it and we thank you for your patience. 2) "Cantus firmus". This search option is still under construction, but some examples give you an idea of its interest. And 3) "Liturgical feast". We have adopted the "List of feasts" in Cantus: A Database for Ecclesiastical Chant — Inventories of Chant Sources (http://cantus.uwaterloo.ca/); we thank Debra Lacoste (University of Waterloo, Canada) for her permission to do that. Since Cantus and BHP share the same webmaster (Jan Koláček), we hope that in the near future it will be possible to implement searches by feasts to connect both chant and polyphony for any given liturgical feast in the Hispanic world.
